Gone are the days when singers were freely and passionately singing without the help of “pitch correction”, yes, I am referring to the infamous auto-tune. This is a continuation of my previous post, “what do you think about auto-tune?” Why the continuation you wonder? it’s because i’m truly annoyed with this audio processor that is plaguing the music industry.

Too many artists are utilizing auto-tune into their music: Ke$ha, T-Pain, The Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Kanye West, Jason Derulo, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, and quite a few others. I found it rather ironic that Jay-Z released a single titled “DOA (Death of Auto-tune)”, but still used the device on another track, and on the same album (ain’t that funny).

Lately, even the really good singers have been reinventing themselves so to speak by experimenting with auto-tune; Mary J. Blige used it on her song “The One“, Christina Aguilera on “Bionic“, which is contradicting, because she wore a t-shirt before that stated “Auto-Tune is for pussies”. I really can’t understand why they’d use the device because both can sing amazingly well.

Auto-Tune has been around since the 1990’s. It was evident in Cher‘s hit single “Believe“, released back in 1998, and the song became the first major hit to ever employ the device. Auto-Tune has become so popular in today’s society, that it’s even being used on the hit series “Glee“. What I wanna know is, can these musicians perform live without the device, I would love to hear singers singing naturally without any vocal effects. As I’ve stated before, I’d like to get my money’s worth at a concert. I can understand an artist lip syncing if they are doing a lot of dancing, but using the device throughout the entire concert to me is such a joke.

You might be reading this and thinking I utterly hate the device, but really I’m just irritated by its consistence in an entire song. In my opinion, if you cannot sing, please don’t become another studio creation, get professional training or pursue another career.
