Meet Kimberly Elise, an American film and television actress. Elise has gained notable critical acclaim for her roles in 'Beloved', 'John Q', 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman', and the television series 'Close to Home'. Kimberly Elise Trammel was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She completed her BA in Mass Communications at the University of Minnesota. Elise made her movie debut in the 1996 film 'Set it Off', starring alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Queen Latifah. Her breakthrough role was in the television movie 'The Ditchdigger's Daughter' in 1997. The film was based on the Pulitzer-prize nominated 1995 memoir 'The Ditchdigger's Daughters: A Black Family's Astonishing Success Story', written by Yvonne S. Thornton.
Elise’s role in ‘The Ditchdigger’s Daughters‘ earned her a ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award in a movie or miniseries at the 19th annual CableACE Awards. In 1998, Kimberly nailed a role in ‘Beloved‘, starring alongside Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. Elise starred opposite Denzel Washington in the emotional box office hit ‘John Q‘ in 2002, and later on in the Tyler Perry hit ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman‘ in 2004. ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ earned Kimberly Elise her first NAACP award; winning ‘Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture’.
In between filming movies, Kimberly also appeared in television dramas. Her most recognized television role was starring as Maureen Scofield, a no-nonsense prosecutor in the CBS drama ‘Close to Home‘, which aired from 2005 – 2007. Elise has since appeared in other television dramas including Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, and has recently starred in the Tyler Perry movie ‘For Colored Girls‘, which is an adaptation of the Ntozake Shange’s 1975 stage play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’.
Kimberly Elise has two children with her ex-husband, Ajableu and Butterfly Oldham. She and Maurice Oldham divorced in 2005, after being married for 16 years. He passed away in 2007 from massive blood clot.
