Spotlight – Within Temptation

Meet Within Temptation, one of the most popular Metal/Rock band from the Netherlands. The band was formed in 1996 by vocalist Sharon Den Adel and her partner and guitarist Robert Westerholt, and describes their music to be Symphonic Rock.

Within Temptation became known in the Dutch underground scene after releasing their album ‘ENTER‘ in 1997. They made their way into mainstream in 2001 with the release of their hit single ‘Ice Queen‘, from their second album ‘Mother Earth‘. ‘Ice Queen’ reached #2 on the Dutch charts, and the band won the Buma Export Award four years in a row, due to the fact that they had the most records sold.

Their third album “The Silent Force“, released in 2004 debuted at #1 on the Dutch charts, along with their fourth album “The Heart of Everything“, which was released in March 2007. “The Heart of Everything” was later released in the U.S in July, and Within Temptation headlined their first North American tour fall 2007. This album was their first to be released in the states, and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

In 2008, Within Temptation performed for 10,000 fans at Ahoy, the Netherlands for their ‘Black Symphony” show, along with The Metropole Orchestra, a choir, and guests artists including Keith Caputo, and Anneke van Giersbergen. They performed a total of 21 songs, and the live show was later released on DVD and CD. After the success of their promotional tours in 2008, the band announced they would take a year off from touring, as Sharon was currently pregnant with her second child, and they wanted to start working on their new material.

In 2009, Within Temptation released a live DVD titled “An Acoustic Night At The Theatre“, made up of a set of their performances from their second theatre tour. Early 2010, Within Temptation’s single “All I Need” from their fourth album was featured on the “Miss Mystic Falls” episode of the popular American television series “The Vampire Diaries“. This feature gave the single minor success in digital music stores, reaching #10 on the American iTunes Rock Charts.

Within Temptation spent late their break working hard on their fifth studio album now titled “The Unforgiving“. The first single “Where Is The Edge“, will be released on December 15.

Their fifth album will be released March 2011. The band’s official website has been updated daily, giving their fans behind the scene peeks of the album’s process and providing information about their future tour dates. Sharon Den Adel is currently pregnant with her third child, and therefore the band’s upcoming tour for 2011 will be re-scheduled.

Within Temptation have made music about Love, Suffering, Injustice, Abuse, Inspiration, you name it, they have done it all it seems. Definitely am anticipating their new single release, and I can’t wait to see what this super talented band have in store for their fans. Their music is truly one in a million, and I advise people to check them out if you haven’t done so already. Do not sleep on good music!

Check out two of my favorite WT songs and videos, “Stand My Ground“, “Memories” and “Frozen“.
