Meet Flyleaf, an American alternative rock band who gained notable success from their single “All Around Me“. Flyleaf was formed in 2000 by vocalist Lacey Sturm, guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, bassist Pat Seals, and James Culpepper. The band has kept their original line-up since debut.
Flyleaf originally called themselves Passerby before changing their name after getting signed to Octone Records. As Passerby, they released three EPs and played over 100 shows in their home state of Texas. In 2004, Flyleaf did a showcase for Octone Records, and the president was impressed by their sound. In March 2004, the band travelled to Seattle, WA to begin recording an EP. After the release of their self-titled EP, Flyleaf toured with Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, Staind, and 3 Doors Down, to promote their their music and expand their fan base. The band released their debut single and music video “Breathe Today” later on at the end of 2004.
In 2005, Flyleaf released their first studio album, which included appearances from Ryan White of Resident Hero, and Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction. The band released four mainstream singles from the album, “I’m so Sick“, “Fully Alive“, “All Around Me“, and “Sorrow“. “All Around Me” went on to become the band’s biggest hit to date, selling over one million copies and going platinum in the U.S. In 2006, Flyleaf played on the Family Values Tour, and later toured with Disturbed, Stone Sour, and Nonpoint on the Music As A Weapon Tour III. In 2007, the band headlined their Justice & Mercy Tour, after touring Europe and Australia with Three Days Grace and Forever Never.
Flyleaf completed the recording of their second album “Memento Mori“, and released it in November 2009. They released five singles from the album: “Again“, “Beautiful Bride“, “Missing“, “Chasm“, and “Arise“. To promote their second album, the band toured throughout the U.S. alongside Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace from January to March 2010. In April 2010, Flyleaf went on a headlining tour called Unite & Fight. The tour lasted until June 2010. The band continued with second leg of the Unite & Fight tour in September, and ended it in October. They continued to perform at music festivals until Lacey announced her pregnancy in November 2010. She and husband Joshua Sturm are expecting their first child in early 2011.
In December 2010, Flyleaf released an EP titled “Remember to Live“, and a cover of John Mark McMillan’s “How He Loves” on December 21. The band is currently on a break while Lacey is pregnant, and have plans of returning later on in 2011.
Flyleaf’s music depicts inspirational lyrics about love, life and other issues. My favorite songs so far are “All Around Me” and “Arise“.
