"Who is Esperanza Spalding?" was the question asked by many, after the jazz singer won the Grammy for Best New Artist on Sunday night. Not only did Esperanza shock stars in attendance, but many fans became puzzled and angry at the fact that Justin Bieber lost out to her. In retaliation, these disgruntled fans went in on Esperanza with the "social network" attack, and also defacing the musician's wiki page.
Justin’s very loyal but psychotic fans tweeted death threats to Esperanza such as:
“I’m going to murder Esperanza Spalding.”
“WATCH OUT ESPERANZA SPALDING…”
“BE CAREFUL CUS MORE THAN 7 MILLION GIRLS OUTHERE WANT TO KILL YOU, INCLUDING ME.”
Profanity was also used in the graffiti they left on her wiki, which is open to the public (that is why this is not a recommended source to cite when doing your school papers). Fans wrote:
“SHE IS F****** REATARD THAT NO ONE HAS HEARD OF SO B**** PLEASE DIE !”
“VIVA LA JUSTIN BIEBER!”
While another wrote in Spalding’s defense:
“you’re all ridiculous go away.”
The fact of the matter is, what gives these fans with clearly psychological issues the right to say this hard-working woman doesn’t deserve her first Grammy award? oh and by the way, there were other musicians in the category as well: Drake, Florence + The Machine, and Mumford & Sons, but their fans aren’t reacting as dramatic as Biebers.
The Grammy Awards has always been known to surprise people over the years. The musicians you least expect to win are always the ones going home with the awards. Who knew Eminem wouldn’t win album of the year, or even song of the year. It’s just how it is. Everyone worked really hard, and winning a Grammy is the biggest achievement of a musicians career.
Justin Bieber has yet to comment on the behavior of his fans, neither has Esperanza on being ill-treated and disrespected, but they don’t have to. These fans are what Eminem declared as “Stans”. Their entire lives revolve around these musicians, and they create somewhat of an alternate reality or “fantasy” if you may, that they can actually be with their idols. This is clearly the consequences from consuming yourself with too much pop culture. These “stans” need to receive treatment for their wildly obsession and get back to reality. To be honest, I myself have never heard about Esperanza Spalding until February 13, but I’m glad I did. I found her music to be quite interesting and I truly enjoy listening to her now. She is truly talented and is indeed very deserving of that Grammy award.
This is my opinion. Leave your comments below.
