ABC has announced the cancellation of two long running daytime soaps: “All My Children” & “One Live To Live“. I feel neither saddened nor shocked by this decision, as ratings haven’t been great and both are costing the network tons of dough in losses. In today’s society, where reality tv and social media is taking over, there’s just no room for these two classic soaps anymore, as millions of women have lost interest, or should I say it’s the soaps that have gotten uninterested. According to Brian Frons, president of daytime programming for the Disney ABC Television Group, “You can’t cut costs enough to make up for more than the 25% in losses. There comes a point when you can no longer justify the expenses.” I know there are many who are loyal to both soaps, however I cannot begin to name a single person from either other than Susan Lucci as “Erica Kane” in “All My Children“.
Sad to say, but who watches daytime dramas these days? and ABC is only the latest network canceling soaps by the way. A few years prior, CBS canceled “Guiding Light” and “As The World Turns“. These daytime dramas just aren’t pulling in the viewers like they used to in the past. As a young girl, I remember watching soaps like “Sunset Beach“, “Days of Our Lives” and “Bold and the Beautiful“, but honestly I’ve grown up distracted from them all. I guess it’s fair to say the internet took over and pre-occupied everyone’s mind. Driving us away from the lies and deceit, heated affairs, murder, staging deaths, kidnapping, and the other wild but somewhat close to reality situations that the characters try to depict in these soaps that once made us loved them.
Both soap operas will go off the air by the beginning of 2012, and will be replaced by two (obviously going to be boring) new shows about food and lifestyle transformations. You might think, how can they replace those two shows with such different concepts, but the answer is quite clear: those two new shows cost less. “All My Children” and “One Life To Live” have both been running for over 40 years, and with both now getting cancelled, “General Hospital” is the only remaining soap left on ABC. And in all honesty, I hope it stays because that one is a true classic.
How do you feel about these two soaps getting the ax? good move or bad?
