Interview by Kai
Eclectic, Soulful, Natural, Authentic, and Intriguing, that is the complete embodiment of ESNAVI. All you need is one listen to become mesmerized by this talented singer and songwriter hailing from Wisconsin. Her name might sound fairly new but this rising diva has been making waves since a young age. She certainly has a lot to offer, including an “unexpected love” between the artist and anyone lucky enough to capture one of her many powerful performances. It’s no wonder she named one of her songs “Electric Fantasy” because indeed her vocal abilities are somewhat surreal and unbelievable.
ESNAVI has been rocking stages and demonstrating the versatility she possesses. I find it rather puzzling why she’s not receiving the much deserving recognition she ought to get because this woman redefines the meaning of ‘natural talent’. I highly doubt that you’ll deny this fact but if you so happen to, then add “Exit E” to your playlist. Trust me when I say you’ll be blown away. Now, while I interrupt my doting session on this truly genuine and down-to-earth artist, listen to her single below, purchase the album on iTunes, and continue on to check out our exclusive interview to discover this soulful force:
EY: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and how did you get your start in music?
I’m from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I got my first start with writing songs and performing after high school with a local studio. However, it wasn’t until I moved to New York that I started my professional singing career. I recorded my first project and began performing around New York to make a name for myself.
EY: Who are some of your musical influences?
Stevie Wonder. He’s a genius. I marvel at his work.
EY: How do you feel about being compared to Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott?
I take it as a compliment because both artists have dope voices, great music, and successful careers.
“I’m inspired by our glorious universe, society, and love.”
EY: Describe your sound and what makes it original?
My sound is Eclectic soul. It’s original because it’s fresh. It hasn’t been copied off of anything or anyone.
EY: What’s the concept behind your album “Exit-E?”
Exit E is my stop on the music highway; it’s where you enter my world. When you listen to the album, you travel with me on a 16-track musical journey.
EY: “Unexpected Love” is such a beautiful song. Tell us about the story behind it.
Thank you. It’s based on a real experience. The lyrics tell a lot of the story. It happened at a time in my life when I wasn’t looking to date anyone or meet someone new. I was hanging out with a friend one evening and was struck by a guy that captured my attention. He wasn’t the type of guy that I typically vibe with, yet it was something about his aura that had me intrigued. I couldn’t leave the place without saying something to him and after our conversation was sparked, the story began. He became ‘The Unexpected Love’.
“I want to evoke emotion when people listen to my music.”
EY: I heard that you wrote your songs. So, how challenging was it to write songs for the album and where do you get inspiration?
Most of the songs were created during impromptu sessions at the studio. My producer would play the guitar and the words and melodies would come to me off the top of my head. The lyrics are based on real life experiences and situations. So the challenging part wasn’t writing the songs, but turning what we created during those impromptu sessions into a structured song format. I’m inspired by our glorious universe, society, and love.
EY: What are you hoping people will take from your music, and where do you see yourself going in years to come?
I want to evoke emotion when people listen to my music. I want them to feel my passion when I deliver the words I sing. I want them to walk away from my music feeling good and inspired. I hope they relate to the song lyrics and live through it when listening to it. I see myself becoming a well-known artist across the globe. I plan to continue evolving as an artist, releasing more albums and having the opportunity to tour worldwide. And if an award or two comes my way in the meantime, I can see that as well. 8)
EY: Can you share with us your views on r&b artists who incorporate pop/dance elements into their sound to make it more mainstream?
The music industry is a lot different now. These days you’ll hear more artists, not just R&B artists, incorporate elements outside of their genre to reach a broader audience. I’ve heard some of the most unlikely collaborations over the past few years and I think it’s primarily for that purpose.
“Do it, only if you love it.”
EY: Seems to me that it takes away the label of adult contemporary r&b when they switch up their music like that, but would you ever consider doing it?
I agree that Adult Contemporary R&B has a certain sound, so anything that deviates from that sound, will not fit into that category. Its one thing when an artist does a remix or a song or two like that, but when it becomes your sound on every song, you’re no longer in that genre. I actually have done it. I have a more pop/dance song on my album entitled ‘Ding Ding’, yet it still has soul. I wanted to do at least one track that was a little different than everything else on the album to display my versatility.
EY: What’s next for you?
Exposing my music overseas on a much broader level.
EY: Thank you for taking the time. Please leave a message for you fans, as well as any advice to those trying to make it in the industry.
Thank you for the interview and introducing me to your readers. To all of my fans, I thank you all for the love and support. Advice: Do it, only if you love it. Not for fame or fortune.
