Well, aside from being named after the brightest star in the constellation Virgo, which I have no problem with, this new group SPICA looks rather interesting to keep an eye on in the new year. It's kinda, actually no let me rephrase that, IT IS crowdy in the Kpop industry at the moment, being that so many groups, particularly female groups, have debuted. And I have certainly lost count; they didn't leave anything memorable for me to stick with them anyways. However, there is something about SPICA that intrigues me, and it has nothing to do with Lee Hyori cause that lady has no talent besides looking pretty and posing for pictures. Yes! I said it, and I will not retract my statement because Hyori can sing just as much as Paris Hilton can act. Anyways, back to the really talented ones.
SPICA captivated me recently with their soulful rendition of “Stand Up For Love,” the hit song performed originally by Destiny’s Child. Their group harmony was banging; I literally had goose bumps listening to their heart wrenching voices. Feel it for yourselves, then come back to reality where I await with more reasons why this group could work:
So, will SPICA break the mold and deliver something of substance? It’s possible. First of all, I love the r&b and soul vibe they have. They don’t really come off as a pop group and I’m not sure how I’d react to them singing pop songs, unless it was a mixture like May J.’s “No, No, No” (What! I love that song). Anyways, if their label decides to take a pop route then it better be on and POPPING cause there’s so much corny pop songs out now and these ladies have too much of that good s**t to just let it slither away.
Secondly, please NO AUTO-TUNE. I swear that annoying effect is one of the reasons I don’t listen to kpop that much these days because everybody and their mommas using auto-tune. SPICA can sing, all FIVE members CAN SING. That’s a major plus for any group because sometimes I see these girls/boys debut and only 2/5 of the members can actually carry a decent tune. I’m just saying.
Lastly, what’s up with that teaser, and please don’t tell me that’s their debut song. Well, regardless, I’m actually waiting for the EP to hear what they’re further capable of and I’d like to see them performing in front of an audience. If there’s absolutely nothing worth my hearing on their first mini album then I’ll give them up to the second EP to get it right.
Oh! by the way, I did like their digital single “Intensely,” but not the MV because guess who the lead actress was? And for that reason I won’t even bother putting the video here cause all you’re seeing is Ms. Lee pondering around throughout the entire 4:28 trying to come off as a woman “drunk on love,” A-la Rihanna. With all that said, and I almost wrote a novel. I sincerely wish SPICA the best of luck because the industry could really use some strong vocalists, and I hope their debut goes well due to their undeniable talent and not who they’re associated with. That’s just my opinion.
What do you think about SPICA?
