10 House Cleaning Tricks for All of You Who Hate Doing Chores

It’s a fact of life: though few of us enjoy chore, they have to be done. How can we make the job a little easier?

1. A mattress isn’t easy to clean.

It doesn’t fit in the washing machine and I doubt the dry cleaner would welcome us taking it to them.

One option we have is to put vodka into a water spray bottle. Spray the vodka over your mattress and leave it to dry. Odour-causing bacteria will be killed by the vodka.

2. The microwave is often neglected.

They are all about speed and stopping to clean inside when the food is cooked just slows us down again!

Cut a couple of lemons in half and put them in a glass jug or bowl of water. Microwave it until the water boils and then leave it for a minute or two. The steam will soften and loosen the old food on the sides of the microwave and it can easily be cleaned with a cloth.

3. Greasy finger marks on the walls can be annoying.

However, try covering the marks with white chalk and leave it for a few minutes. Then wipe the chalk off which will remove the marks too!

4. Pet hair on rugs, carpets or sofas can be a real nightmare.

The hair clings to the surface and can be difficult to budge. Try using a rubber washing up glove (the ones with small pimples on the fingers are best!) and rub the surface. Lightly dampening the surface will help but don’t put too much water on. The hair will be lifted from the surface.

Alternatively, a damp washing up sponge rubbed on the carpet or sofa will shift the hair. You can find more tips for cleaning up pet hair here.

5. Burn marks in pans can take forever to remove by scrubbing.

There is an easier way. Put water into the bottom of the pan and add some white vinegar. About a cup of vinegar will do. Turn on the heat and simmer. Remove the pan from the heat and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Empty the pan. Light scrubbing will now easily remove the burn marks.

6. Is your shower head clogged with hard water deposits?

Try taking a plastic bag and put in some distilled white vinegar. Tie the bag over the shower head and leave it to soak overnight. Secure with a rubber band. In the morning, remove the bag and use a cloth to wipe away the scum.

7. If you use dryer sheets in your dryer, once they are finished freshening your laundry don’t throw them away.

The anti-static chemicals on them are superb for wiping TV screens or your laptop. Dust will be repelled from the screens in the future.

8. Your dishwasher needs cleaning from time to time.

Put a bowl containing white vinegar in the top rack and run the dishwasher on a hot cycle. When it is finished, run it again on a short cycle after sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher.

9. Water rings on a wooden table spoil the look of our furniture.

Soak up any remaining moisture with a paper towel. While the ring is still damp, blast the ring with a hair dryer. The mark should disappear.

10. Sometimes the easiest way is to get someone else to do it!

If you find you have a problem with cockroaches, silverfish or fleas you are better getting in the professionals. Some pests can cause illness to you and your family. Get the job done properly. You can find more information on pest controlling here.
