Let me start off by saying I get it, there are gatekeepers in the music industry and unfortunately, women are pushed to be sexual in order to sell. But seriously? Couldn’t Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion rap about something else? Or maybe make the song more tasteful? WAP, which by now I’m sure everyone knows what that stands for, cannot be played in mainstream without a ton of bleeps. The song has so much vulgar and inappropriate lines that nearly every word is chopped out, and there’s hardly anything left for clarity.
WAP is overall a terrible song with great rap flow from Megan. I feel like the over-the-top sex theme is done too many times by both ladies, and I would have loved to see or hear something different, especially empowering, from this collaboration.
Versatility is the key to artistry. You don’t need to rap about hardcore sex all the time. The topic of a song could be fun and playful, too.
Now, let’s address the music video.
The quality is amazing. The visuals, scene transitions, hair and makeup, and some of the choreography were stunning. And I feel like the video out-shined the song because of those aspects. But why did they need to be in a high class whore house? Why did they need to play the roles of ladies of the night? The heavy sexual lyrics of the song didn’t have to be portrayed in that setting. In my opinion.
There were also several symbolism going on; a lot of checkered, stripes, and objects of the hypnotizing sorts. Not trying to get all conspiracy theory, but I know I’m not the only one who saw those things.
Let’s move on to the cameos.
Again, why did those female artists (Rosalia, Rubi Rose, Sukihana, Mulatto, Normani) portray ladies of the night? And why the hell was Kylie Jenner in the video? At this point, such a culture vulture shouldn’t be making appearances in any music videos that also surround black women and black music. It’s a slap in the face. And while I find it distasteful they decided to create a whore house as the theme, I’m even more disheartened of that vulture’s presence. She received a long shot, too. None of the other women got such a lengthy shine. But Kylie seemed to be the madam or the highest paid. Yikes! Talk about disappointing all around.
I have a gripe about Normani’s cameo as well. This is not something I feel her management should have agreed to. Normani needs to be releasing her own music and videos. Not acting as a prostitute in WAP. It’s been almost a year since Motivation. Her team allowed that moment to fizzle when she should have utilized it with an album and several performances. I have no idea what her management is doing, but they’re clearing slacking and I honestly believe they do not know how to manage such a talented woman.
In closing, Cardi B and Megan could have done so much better. Portrayed female power and dominance in a more tasteful art form. But yeah, this is all just my opinion. I don’t even have the feeling to go listen to the song again. Because it doesn’t have that epic factor. It’s the kind of song you’ll forget right after, or in a matter of days. I hope they come together to do something greater in the future.
