Alma Katsu has embarked on a journey that began way back in her childhood. Sure she’s spent a part of her life doing something different and without a doubt non-fictional, but Katsu has never given up on her passion to delve into the world of fantasy.
Katsu’s debut novel, ‘The Taker‘, has stolen the hearts of many avid readers, including myself. Her decision to write about the dark side of love, lust and power was quite a bold move, as only a few taking on the Gothic genre has ever really made any lasting impression. However, Alma’s novel leaves you hungry for more, and a sequel is very much appreciated and accepted. The day of ‘reckoning‘ shall surely come.
Check out our exclusive interview with the author below and be sure to pick up a copy of The Taker if you haven’t already and start reading today:

As flattering as it is to be compared to the likes of Anne Rice, Alma Katsu has her own unique stories to tell. With a hot debut under her belt and a very much anticipated follow-up on the way, the Alaska native certainly has the world of book lovers in a craze. Now, with my intro locked, let’s get down to business.
It’s always interesting how guests respond to our tradition ’10 quickies’, particularly writers, being that we’ve hardly the pleasure of having such individuals on EY. Well, what are you waiting for? Continue below to see Alma’s very ‘quick’ and interesting answers:

Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she’s paired with dark child Varen Nethers for an English project. As disappointed as she is at start, Varen also makes it clear that the feelings of distaste are mutual. Little did Isobel know that aside from working on this project, she would also be pulled into the dreamworld of this mysterious yet intriguing guy. Their feelings are developed as worlds intertwine, but more importantly, Isobel would have to save her new found love from the very thing he himself helped create.
‘Nevermore‘ portrays a chilling and unlikely romance that you’re bound to get drawn into. It’s all fair in the beginning, describing a girl’s misfortune for getting placed with one of their school’s misfits, but once Edgar Allan Poe became the center piece amongst a series of strange events, I knew the end results would be anything but ‘normal.’It is Poe afterall, and we know his sense of reality isn’t too far from fantasy.
A simple love story would be highly predictable and boring had there been no twists. Don’t you think? Continue reading “Book Review – ‘Nevermore’ by Kelly Creagh”
Izzy’s dealing with a lot but she’s comfortable with her life in Harborside Beach, North Carolina. In balancing her time between working as a lifeguard, being on the swim team, and sorting out her ‘friendship’ with Brayden, she’s also taking care of her grandmother. All this juggling comes to an end when grams along with their social worker locates a long-lost “uncle” nearby, who’s willing to provide a home for the 15 year old. Surely, it wouldn’t have come down to leaving the only home she already knew but upon coming to terms with her illness, grams had to make arrangements for herself and Izzy while she still could.
Isabelle is now placed in a situation where she has to adjust to a new life, new family, and new drama. Things get even more confusing for the teen after learning a secret that makes her question everything she knew before.
Jen Calonita is an admirably clever storyteller; Belles delivers a fantastic and compelling plot fit for any daytime soap. There’s romance, manipulation, backstabbing, and all the juicy stuff you can think of blended well in the good ol southern atmosphere. This is a must-read if you’d like to be entertained. Clare Fern is now popular in high school and around town. Her previous activities involving aiding the police with her ‘gift’ has piqued the interest of many, including former enemies Kendall and Brooke. The in-crowd seems to be warming up to her but is it for who she is or what she can do? While Clare continues to question their motives, one person remains the same and she’s neither flattered nor impressed by this suddenly famous psychic.
Kim Harrington is a creative writer. Her words flow precisely well. Perception is a stretch from your usual paranormal, but a little mystery will satisfy your taste just the same.
The follow-up, while still enjoyable, left me with mixed feelings. It’s not that I didn’t like it, its just that the ‘Perception‘ wasn’t always clear, and the story was a bit drawn out and somewhat lacked the element of spontaneity. Continue reading “Book Review – ‘Perception’ by Kim Harrington”
Estelle Chavez is a smart girl with a lot going for her. Well, a lot of ‘normal’ stuff that is. She’s athletic, a helpful daughter to a overworked mother, and a caring older sister making sure her siblings are on the right path. She’s just an all around goody goody, until wild child Ruby Caroline walks into her life and sort of pulls Stella into this new world she had never experienced before.
Stephanie Guerra‘s ‘Torn‘ pits stability against the unfamiliar. Two teens, both with family issues but one seems much more troubled than the other. It’s a question of friendship; do you remain loyal and help the other the best way you can, or do you walk away from it and return to the life you once had? Continue reading “Book Review – ‘Torn’ by Stephanie Guerra”
Haven Terra, along with her equally smart best friend Dante and another classmate Lance, landed an internship with the prestigious Lexington Hotel in Chicago. This is evidently an opportunity fit for the privileged and though all three teens excel in their studies, neither had applied for such nor could they fathom the reason as to why they were specifically chosen.
Haunted by her own issues of not knowing who she really was, where she came from or what caused the unsightly scars on her body, Haven is appreciative of the given chance to intern at such a luxurious location in hopes of getting highly recommended to a college of her dreams. However, she has no idea of the ulterior motives their new mentors and the ‘Outfits’ have in store for them, nor the part she’ll have to play in altering their plans for humanity.
“Illuminate” is a story about mystery, manipulation, romance, power, desire, and of course the on-going battle of good and evil. Continue reading “Book Review – ‘Illuminate’ by Aimee Agresti”

Interview by Kai
I was instantly mesmerized by the alluring cover of Jessie Harrell‘s debut novel, “Destined.” That certainly invited me to read the author’s work and learn more about the woman behind it all. So, just who is Jessie Harrell? Well, she’s not among the authors writing novels about the usual vampires and werewolves. Harrell is a wife, mother, occasional traveler, and lover of ancient myths. I’m certain that the tagline “you cannot escape what is destined” not only applies to her first book but to the writer ‘Beneath the Surface‘ as well. And I suggest you jump on board, read her debut and get in the know because another masterpiece is set for release.
