Album Review: Koda Kumi’s W Face ~Outside~

Gosh. I can’t remember the last time I listened to a Koda Kumi album. Actually, I think the last one I purchased and listened to was JAPONESQUE. For some reason, her music hadn’t grabbed my attention since then, but after catching snippets of her latest double album release, specifically the Outside version, I must say I’m loving the sound of Koda Kumi once again. Maybe it’s … Continue reading Album Review: Koda Kumi’s W Face ~Outside~

FAKY Returns As Quartet

You guys remember Alternative Jpop group FAKY? Well, they went on a surprise hiatus shortly after the group’s debut, abruptly stopping promotions. The last release was a compilation of their previously released singles, which included former members Diane and Tina. Not sure why those girls left, but I must say I like the new addition: Akina. Beautiful California girl with an edge. I’m looking forward … Continue reading FAKY Returns As Quartet

4Minute has “Love Tension”

I usually like 4Minute‘s music and their videos, but their latest Jpop single left me with mixed feelings. Not that the song wasn’t appealing, it was generic as most of mainstream dance so of course it’s got the appeal. But what I thought was kind of lackluster was the music video. They seemed so tired, and am I the only one sick of seeing Hyuna … Continue reading 4Minute has “Love Tension”

Music Review: Che’Nelle’s Believe

Release date: 7.4.2012 Label: EMI Music Japan Purchase: CDJapan |  Rating: 4/5 I’ve never paid any attention to this artist before. But I’m so glad I finally did. Her music is awesome. Taking inspiration from uptempo genres like dance, electro, and dancehall, to midtempo pop, r&b, and soul, “Believe” is one of the best Urban Jpop albums I’ve heard all year. Did You Hear?

Kahi will be “graduating” from her badass Kpop group After School. According to Pledis Entertainment, her label and management, as well as a ton of news outlet in South Korea, Kahi will be leaving the group to work on her solo career as well as her acting. Now, I don’t want to offend anyone but isn’t the reason why After School was so hot to begin with due to the presence of Kahi. I mean, she puts the fierceness in the group. And no one can pull dance moves off like she does. It’s definitely going to be hard to continue following After School now that Kahi’s leaving, but I’m sure true PLAYGIRLZ won’t waver their support. As for Kahi, I’ve always been a fan since her days as a  dancer & choreographer, and will continue to ride with her to the end. After all, she is and will always be ‘The Queen of Dance’. I just love her versatility, don’t you?

Since the group’s formation the company did state that there would be a graduation system in place where members were free to leave as they choose to, but I’ve always considered this as a sugarcoated excuse for firing the members who don’t bank much for them. Well, just as they have the graduation system there’s also the admission part, Continue reading “Did You Hear?”

Will Crystal Kay’s Crossover Be Successful?

It was recently revealed that Crystal Kay will be making an appearance on Far East Movement‘s upcoming fourth studio album ‘Dirty Bass.’ The Japanese r&b and urban pop star is reportedly working on an english album for international release and hoping this collaboration will be a breakthrough. Crystal is talented, that I’ll give her, but let’s be real we all know that the only way an artist can make it in the U.S market is if their promo team eats, sleeps and breathes their music.  Continue reading “Will Crystal Kay’s Crossover Be Successful?”

[Album Review] After School’s “Playgirlz”

After School has always been my favorite kpop girl group. I like their style; not particularly the member system in place, but mainly their musical concepts. And as much as I like them, I never allowed that to overshadow my judgement on any of their releases. If the song sucks, I’ll be honest and admit it just as quick as I am to admit when it sounds pretty hot. After School, more precisely their leader, has tasteful elements in whatever it is they deliver to their target market. Unfortunately, the group hasn’t received greater recognition for their hard work, still they continue to strive for that wish they sought out to achieve. Recently, AS has ventured into the Jpop market in hopes of acquiring a wider range of feedback not yet completely felt in their homeland. So far, I’m not necessarily impressed but I believe they’ll improve because in all honesty, they usually do. Thus the birth of their first Jpop album ‘Playgirlz‘. Jin Akanishi Finds Time To ‘Takeover’ & Get Married?

It’s definitely quite sudden, and somewhat of a horrific shock for fangirls, but according to various news sites as well as the singer’s management company, Jin Akanishi is indeed getting married. Why am I posting this? Well, it intrigues me how one artist could be working so hard without slowing down and still find time to get married, much less have any sort of relationship. I mean, he’s probably very busy with his upcoming North American shows, as well as with the promotion of his singles. Also, because of how hard some of his fans are taking it. I’ve read how girls are feeling depressed and heartbroken as if they were in a relationship with the man. But let’s be realistic here, he’s just a good-looking performer but as normal as you and I could possibly be. Am I disappointed that he’s off the market? Not in the least. I wasn’t caught in a fantasy world like most. However, don’t you think that entertainers (particularly young male entertainers) who get married somewhat  causes a depreciation of their fanbase? I think so. Continue reading “Jin Akanishi Finds Time To ‘Takeover’ & Get Married?”

[Review] May.J’s “Secret Diary”

Released: 1.25.2012

-Japanese R&B/Urban Pop singer May J. has unveiled her fifth studio album, “SECRET DIARY.” The title was enough to intrigue me into anticipating the album’s arrival but the short clips had me sold. In the entertainment business image is everything, even placed at a higher level than talent. In May’s case, it’s all about the talent, and of course her beauty is a wonderful addition. I had a good listen to the entire album and was well pleased with the songs. Diversity is very much emphasized; pointing out the singer’s ability to challenge herself in different genres. Whether it’s electro pop, r&b ballads, or bubbly dance, May J. has proven to me that there’s a wide range of ‘secrets’ in her ‘diary’. As for the story behind the new album, let’s look back on May’s description during our interview:

In this album, I’m expressing the inner side of me that I couldn’t show to other people. Such as: my worst relationship with my boyfriend or like a broken friendship with my best friend. I have also put lots of positive messages to this album.”

So, my fellow readers keep that in mind while I take you through my own interpretation of each song onSecret Diary.’ Continue reading “[Review] May.J’s “Secret Diary””
